Forgot Your Vehicle Insurance Card? Now You Can Verify It Using Your Phone!

Drivers in Sri Lanka no longer need to panic if they forget to carry their physical motor insurance card. With the newly introduced Digital Motor Insurance system, motorists can now verify insurance instantly using their mobile phones.

Legal Recognition

Sri Lankan Police and the Insurance Regulatory Commission have officially recognized Digital Motor Insurance Cards as legally valid from May 1, 2026. Physical cards are no longer mandatory if you can provide digital proof.

How to Verify

  • Dial *1338# on your phone
  • Enter your vehicle or policy number
  • Wait for the 'ACTIVE' status
  • Verification via SMS is also available
  • Use your insurer's mobile app
  • PDF or Screenshots are accepted

Important Formatting Rules

When typing your vehicle number for USSD or SMS verification:

  • Use Hyphens: Always use a hyphen (e.g., WP-1234 or CAA-5678).
  • No Spaces: Do not include any spaces between characters.
  • Sri Plates: For older "Sri" number plates, use the keyword SRI (e.g., 15-SRI-9999).
  • USSD Method: Dial *1338# and follow the prompts (works without data).
  • SMS Method: Send your vehicle number to 1338 to receive your status.
